Introduction

Iron Road Hobbies is pleased to announce our line of custom model railroad module kits. We produce custom and standard module kits for model railroaders who are interested in building a “portable” layout but do not have the time, tools, skills or space to build them. Our modules are built according to standards from the NMRA, Free-mo, N-track and other groups in all scales. We can also construct modules that can be used to interchange between other groups of the same scale. For example, if you are using NMRA module standards and you would like to operate with a Free-mo layout.
Our main focus is with HO modules.

Some groups are small and have their own standards not like any other group. If this is your situation, all we need are the basic construction standards and requirements for that group and we can build a module, or set, for you to those specifications. We will also build you an entire layout using a modular system if you desire. All you need to do is add the track and scenery.

All modules are constructed with the latest materials and techniques within your groups standards. We may also use our own methods if they are an improvement on a design and do not interfere with the set standards. All modules are available in either kit form or pre-assembled. Both styles come with all of the basic materials, hardware and detailed instructions. From here, the module’s scenery, track plan and details are for you to decide and install. Basic track, roadbed and wiring can be added for a fee if you choose.

If you are interested in having a module, module set, or entire layout built with modules, please browse the rest of our site and contact us with any questions.

Process

1. We start module construction with a CAD designed plan with all measurements and dimensions.
2. After the customer selects the desired module design(s), we then compile all of the proper materials, depending on your preferences and/or the current standards and recommended practices.
3. Next we fabricate all the parts needed to build the module(s).
4. We then assemble the module and ensure a proper fit. For purchasers of the kit versions, this is the last step before packing and shipping.
5. For those who prefer a pre-assembled module, we assemble it using all of the adhesives and fasteners required. Everything will be assembled EXCEPT the legs, depending on which style you prefer. If you choose to upgrade to folding legs, these will be attached to the module and ready for set-up.

Standard Features and Options

Our modules have many standard features. Most of the standard items are basic parts but are high quality, while keeping the purchase price at a reasonable rate. Standard items include, but are not limited to, basic wiring for power and accessory buses, wood legs and lightweight plywood and foam board construction. Assembled modules come with the standard items installed and the fascia painted a light neutral tan or off white color.

All of our modules also give you the opportunity to add just about any options you choose. You can add or upgrade the DCC connections, add roadbed and track, turnouts, switch machines, different leg styles, sub roadbed construction and more. We have a list of options on this site, or you can make your selections from a current Walthers catalog.

Our modules are a standard 2’x4’, generally the basic dimensions for HO Free-mo and NMRA modules. But you have the option for custom sizes and shapes, starting with extra length and/or width. We can also build modules with curved fascias and drop centers(for bridges, rivers and mountain scenery). We can build just about anything your imagination and budget will allow.

Production Time

Typical production time from the moment you place your order is determined by the type, size and materials of your module. A standard 2’x4’, Free-mo or NMRA, module kit will be prepared, shipped and at your door within 14-28 days via UPS Ground.

Required Tools For Kits

Our module kits come with all holes pre-drilled and pieces labeled for assembly, all power and accessory bus connections installed in the ends and/or fascia, and any wire cut to length and terminals installed. In our instructions for the kits, a list of tools and items you may need for final assembly is provided. These tools include simple hand tools that, if you do not have them, can be purchased inexpensively at a local hardware store or home center. A general list is below.
• Screwdrivers, plain and/or Phillips
• 10mm, 11mm and 12mm sockets and wrenches
• Caulking gun
• Wire connectors
• Pliers
• Construction adhesive for Projects or Heavy Duty

Pricing and Shipping

Our modules are reasonably priced in a way that reflects the man hours required and material cost at the time of construction. Because building material prices fluctuate weekly, and sometimes daily, prices may change without prior notice. But, unless it’s a drastic change, our prices will stay the same as long as possible. See our Pricing page for a list of typical prices. We also offer a discount of 10-30% for orders of 2 modules or more.

All modules are shipped by UPS Ground. Some shipments may be eligible for faster shipping depending on the weight, size and shape of the package. Kit’s for instance, may be able to be shipped Next Day because the package size usually will not exceed size and weight limits. All shipping costs include the cost of packaging and handling.

Since our modules are primarily designed for HO and smaller scales, shipping for larger scale modules may be slightly higher to because of the extra size and weight of materials.

Before we can begin construction of your module(s), we do require full payment of the purchase price plus shipping. Every module is built to order and we need to ensure that we can have all materials available and ready before your module ships.

We may be able to deliver your modules if you are within 50 miles of Centerville, OH. There is a $30 charge for delivery. This way we can also show you how the module is assembled, and personally answer any questions you may have.

We will email you with a tracking number within 48 hours from the time we ship your module.

Accepted Payment Methods

We accept money orders, checks(allow 10-14 days for processing) or Credit/Debit card payments through PayPal ONLY at this time. PayPal it the preferred and most secure method.
